woes of a tall girl

I'm tall.  5'11" to be exact, and I have long legs, which is a blessing and a curse.

A curse? you say.

Yep.  A curse.  Why?  Because it's extremely difficult to find jeans, leggings, pants, etc. with a long enough inseam.  My inseam measures 36" {normal "long" jeans are 34" so even they are ankle-length on me}.  You see my problem, right?  I've found a couple online places that have extra long jeans, but unfortunately, if I'm looking for any kind of non-basic bottom, it becomes near impossible to find it in my length.

Case in point:  I've been looking for a pair of liquid leggings, or leather-esque leggings, for a while, and I've found some I really like, but the inseam is 30".  That's an awkward bit longer than mid-calf.

Any suggestions for places that have extra long jeans/leggings/pants?  {Hint, hint!  I really would like a pair of red skinny jeans/jeggings...}

sag awards red carpet

In third...

Lea Michele:  While some think the slit is too high, I love it!  She has the legs to pull it off, and kept the rest of her look subtly glam to balance it out.

Second...

Kaley Cuoco:  I love the fresh spring color.  It really stands out, and keeps the look young along with the braided hairstyle.

And in first...

Jayma Mays:  I love this dress.  The sparkle works in the neutral black, and the lace in the back is very trendy, plus shows just the right amount of skin on an otherwise not too revealing cut.

Honorable Mention goes to...

Best Dressed Couple award right here!  George always looks dapper, and Stacy Keibler rocks the lace overlay.

Worst Dressed...

Busy Philipps looked, well, busy in this... um... nightgown? Swimsuit cover up?

awkward and awesome friday: suffolk idol style

P.S.  The middle guy won - he was sooo good!  And the girl on the left had such a cute outfit!  I want her shirt.  And boots.

Tonight I worked as Technical Coordinator for Suffolk Idol (SU's version of American Idol) where students can sign up to sing, and it gets narrowed down to three, then a winner.  The winner gets to sing the National Anthem at one of the Celtics games in February!  How cool, right?  There were also some performances by Seriously Bent {the SU improv team} and Wicked {the dance team, which mostly does a lot of hip-hop, and is really good and fun to watch}.  Wicked will also be performing at the Celtics game - that's how awesome they are!

Now hows about some Awkward & Awesomes?...

Awkward
  • Trying to open a door that seems locked, and then someone else comes up behind you and pulls it right open.
  • Your feet getting wet inside your boots, and, upon examination, finding a giant crack in the sole.
  • Duct taping the bottom of the sole of those boots because of said crack.  {I really like these boots... and I'm a poor college student.}
  • Realizing almost too late that you're getting off the elevator at the wrong floor, so you pretend it's what you meant to do all along, then wait for another elevator.  Anyone else? No? Just me?
  • Showing up to class at 1:30 ish, knowing you're a couple minutes late, then finding out later in class that it starts at 1, not 1:30, and you were a whole half hour late.  Whoops...
  • Trying to take a photo of yourself for an outfit post.  It doesn't work.  {I can't wait for my tripod to get here!}
  • My history class.  Nobody talks!  I don't mind speaking up in class, but I don't want to be the only one!  And the teacher tries {she's personable and fun} but nobody speaks up.  It makes me sad that it's such an awkward class, because it has potential to be actually good!

Awesome
  • Speaking to the Board of Trustees on behalf of the show I'm stage managing.  See this post.
  • TC-ing Suffolk Idol.  It was so fun to watch the performers!
  • Taking a quiz that you think crap, I bombed that one after, only to have the teacher collect them and say just kidding, these don't count!  {slightly annoying, but mostly just awesome}
  • Suspenders.  One of my friends has started to wear them a lot recently, and it makes me very happy.
  • The fresh-tossed salad bar at one of the Suffolk cafes.  So delicious, fresh, healthy, AND it's on my meal plan, so that's like free, right?
  • Asking what bold coffee they had on brew at Starbucks, and hearing the {magical} reply of Christmas Blend!  Music to my ears, and so unexpected!

i can see clearly now

Coat: H&M / Shirt: H&M / Jeans: American Eagle / Shoes: Report / Lipstick: MAC Russian Red

Finally got an outfit post up!  Thank God for friends who wield a camera decently.

I got my bangs trimmed today, which means I can see without hair in my eyes {and also that I don't look like a shaggy dog anymore}.  Such a relief!

P.S.  Check out Creeper Dude in photo numero 2.  Ummm...

24 January 2012

the absence of my tripod is starting to annoy me

Today I spoke to the Suffolk University Board of Trustees as a rep for the Performing Arts Office, promoting the show I'm stage managing for them.  Not gonna lie - I was a teensy bit nervous.  The president of the university was there, plus some other board members, and knowing that these people held the power to decide if we got our funding and such... well, I'm sure you can understand why nerves were very present.  But at the same time, it was an honor to be asked to do this.  It turned out to be really quick and simple, and actually really great to hear all the student groups talk about what they were working on.

One goal I have for this blog is for it to reflect my personal style, and I haven't been able to do as many outfit posts as I'd like, mainly because I don't have my tripod here in Boston yet.  Until then, there will just have to a lack of outfit posts {which is too bad because I really liked my outfit today.  Ho hum, pig's bum, maybe I'll wear it again once I actually can photograph it decently}.

In the meantime, I took a few pretty pictures of the snow in Boston Common on my way to class.

22 January 2012

winter wonderland

I am extremely proud of my heritage.  A little French, a wee bit Scottish, a good amount of Swedish, and mostly Norwegian.  It's no wonder sister and I are so tall with all that Viking blood!

Last winter, sister and I had the opportunity to go to Norway and visit family friends and distant relatives.  It was the first time either of us had been to Europe.  In fact, it was the first time we'd been off the North American continent {except Hawaii, but I'm pretty sure that's looped in with North America}.  Anyway, it was perhaps one of the best vacations, and we got to take it with a few of our cousins, which made it all the better.

The photos above are some of the ones I took with my less fancy camera, and I don't joke when I say that in real life, Norway looks like a living postcard - everything blanketed in white under a technicolor sky.  It was surreal.

I'm hoping that {assuming I'll be living in London next fall} I'll be able to go back up to Norway and revisit everybody, and see more of the country.  Aurora Borealis, I'm talkin' to you!  Fingers crossed!

20 January 2012

awkward and awesome friday - the first week back at school

Awkward
  • Entering a classroom with literally no available seats, except the couple that people have put their stuff on, and don't offer to move it so you can sit down.  Rude.
  • Going into designer stores.  Especially Chanel.  Why?  Because the employees stare at you like hawks and even go so far as to "discreetly" follow you around as you look at the pretty things. {Disclaimer: right, as if I could afford Chanel!  But I would like to have the option to feast my eyes if I so please, thank you.}
  • wind blowing at 50 mph and nearly blowing you away.  also, that annoying thing that happens to your eyelid when the wind is really intense, and it feels like it's being blown off your eye.  Whoever dubbed Chicago "The Windy City" has obviously never been to Boston...
  • Someone walking just far enough behind you that it seems rude not to hold the elevator door for them, but awkward to hold it for what seems like forever while they get there.
  • On the subject of elevators {I could go on and on...}, attempting to make small talk with the one other person in it, only to have them look at you like you just got out of the mental institution.  Thanks, I was just trying to be nice...
  • Riding the elevator in silence is just as awkward, by the way.
  • Having a bit of a stuffy nose in class.  Please excuse me as I blow my nose into this Kleenex.  It's a natural body function and it's not like I'm being gross, so please stop looking at me like I'm an alien, thank you very much.

Awesome
  • Being back at school and seeing friends {two of which are featured in the photos this post}.
  • Having your director mention more than once in the first few rehearsals how impressed he is with your stage management skills, and how awesome you are.  Makes a girl feel good!
  • Being told you look beautiful, even if it is an old homeless man who said it.  A compliment is a compliment!
  • Having Fridays off to write these blog posts {I truly enjoy getting to do it!} and lay in bed and watch Gossip Girl while doing everything I need to from my computer.  Sometimes, you just need a lazy day.
  • Chips and guacamole.
  • Sleeping in - I don't get to do this often because of work and class, so I'm excited to be able to sleep in or the next couple days.
  • My classes!  Besides the fact that my earliest class this semester is 10 am {yay!}, three out of four are theater classes, and the other is American History, which I quite enjoy.  Good course load this time around!
  • The show I'm working on.  Such an awesome group of people, and we're really making good headway even though we've only had three rehearsals so far!  I can't wait to see this evolve more, and that's one of the many reasons why I love what I do.

18 January 2012

my two cents on the golden globes red carpet

And my top three for Best Dressed are...

In third...

Amber Riley:  This red gown is so flattering on her, and with her hair down, she looks so effortlessly stunning.

In second...

Jessica Alba:  Can you believe she gave birth six months ago?  She looks amazing!  And I love the color on her - it takes the neutral trend to another level.

And the first place prize goes to...

Maria Menounos:  Way to rock the yellow, girl!  Personally, it's one of my favorite colors, though not always wearable.  In this case, I think the simple cut of the dress allows the bright color to take focus, and prevents it from being too much.  Props to Maria for going big and bold, and totally pulling it off!

Honorable mention goes to...
Uggie from "The Artist" - I mean, c'mon, how can this pup in a bow-tie not steal the show on the red carpet??

Worst Dressed:

Connie Britton:  Aside from the messy hair, this particular shade of pink washing her out, and the pattern being totally outdated, who wears a sundress to a major award ceremony?!  Big no-no.

16 January 2012

oh, the glamorous

Sweater: Forever 21 / Shirt: Express / Jeggings: Nordstrom / Flats: Nordstrom / Necklace: Nordstrom
Lipstick: MAC Russian Red

Welp, I'm back in Boston in my room, and now that I'm here, it feels good to be at my East Coast home.  NYC was amazing, but Boston is familiar, and I've still got my friend here with me until tomorrow!

Today was filled with glam as we got dolled up for a day of shopping on Newbury Street.  We hit stores like Burberry, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Saks in addition to the {somewhat} more affordable places like H&M, Steve Madden, Banana Republic, and Madewell.  It was absolutely freezing, and bundling up was the name of the game!

I may have splurged on a couple things - namely a pair of cashmere gloves from Marc Jacobs {which my hands and fingers endlessly thanked me for!} and a pair of the most stunning bright purple-y blue pumps at Sak's.  Photos of those will come soon, I'm sure!

Back to reality on Tuesday, though I must say, I'm excited for my classes {mostly theater ones}, seeing my school friends, and stage managing Shakespeare in Hollywood this semester.  Also, this semester is when I apply to study abroad in London next fall, and I can't wait to get that set in stone!

Woohoo new semester!  Let's rock!

14 January 2012

awkward and awesome fri... erm, saturday

Awkward

  • Me in this picture.  I have the worst luck taking pictures because my eyes always close right as it takes it.  And there wasn't even a flash!
  • Voldemort hugging Draco in the final HP movie.  Can we please just all take a moment to appreciate the awkward? {http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fdO4Y8q5Dc}
  • Taxi cab rides.  To talk to the cab driver, or not to talk?  One never knows...
  • Pushing the door that says on a big sign to pull the other door.  Yes, I'm aware it was obvious, and I'm aware I can be a moron when it comes to obvious things, thank you.
  • Peanut butter from your bagel sticking to the roof of mouth and your teeth.  Especially when eating it at a crowded bagel shop, where this issue is, I'm sure, apparent to the other customers.
  • Seeing the Applebee's commercial promoting their steaks, and outwardly stating you have no idea why someone would order a steak of all things at Applebee's {"I would never...!}, then being a complete hypocrite and ordering the steak and shrimp dinner thing when you go for dinner {which, by the way, was absolutely delicious}.

Awesome

  • NYC
  • Toasted wheat bagel with real, chunky PB and sliced banana.  So ridonculously delicious that it makes the sticky PB problem worth it.
  • Alan Rickman.  'Nuff said.
  • The fact that I actually got to meet him, stand right in front of him, speak to him, have him speak back...  It was all surreal and I'm still awestruck.
  • The play that he's in on Broadway.  It's called Seminar, and I highly recommend everyone checks it out!  I'd go see it again if I were here longer!
  • Lily Rabe, one of the lead actresses in Seminar, who is absolutely fantastic.
  • And finally, even though I could go on about this play, the playwright, Theresa Rebeck.  She's brilliant.  Might be a new fave.
  • Shopping in NYC!!  Topshop (the only one in the US, I might add), Zara, Sak's 5th Ave, etc, etc,...
  • Mood Fabrics.  I don't sew or anything {so not that skilled}, but even I was impressed!
  • Did I mention NYC??

11 January 2012

new york, new york

Yes, that's Alan Rickman!  And no, no zoom was used for this photo.  I don't usually brag, but in this case, as he is my favorite actor, I kind of have to!  We went and saw Seminar tonight on Broadway at the Golden Theater, and I have to say, it was absolutely fabulous!  Then we waited at stage door to get photos and autographs from everyone on our playbills.  I can tell you right now - that's getting framed!

The writing was immaculate and we could really hear the voice of the playwright {a talented woman named Theresa Rebeck} through the script.  The costuming was clear, and right away gave an idea of each character.  The set was simple to start, yet detailed, and then changed towards the end of the show to reveal a much more complex and impeccably detailed set.  The set change was quick and silent {the fly system must be awesome!}.   The actors {all five of them} were very clear in their choices for their characters, and all performed very well, especially the actress playing Kate, a woman named Lily Rabe.  Overall, I would see this show again, and I'll be looking for it at the Tony's!

I have to say... I love New York!!  I really could see myself living here, and hopefully, I will one day when I'm stage managing touring and Broadway-based shows.  Not only is the theater everything I could hope for and more, but the fashion is amazing.  I've been rocking a bold lip color {which I've really been into these days} almost every day.  In the photo above, I'm wearing MAC's Russian Red.  The shopping here is immense and we've found some great sales!

I really could go on and on, but whew!  My feet may ache from all the walking and standing from the past few days, but my mind is whirring!  I don't want to leave!  Fortunately, we still have a couple more days...

08 January 2012

we're leaving today

I'm leaving for the Big Apple!! My friend and I are waiting at the airport to board as I type, and getting so excited to be in NYC! I've never been, and am so happy to finally be going. When I wake up, I'll be in the city that doesn't sleep!

07 January 2012

over the river and through the woods

.

Yesterday, my sister, my mom, and I drove two hours north of Seattle to Bellingham, where my grandparents live.  We celebrated my sister's birthday with them, indulging in a delicious home-cooked meal {nobody cooks better than grandmothers, I swear!} and some yummy cupcakes.  I always love going to my grandparent's house - it's so cozy, and beautifully decorated, and they have a big backyard with a pond and bridge, and their own little woods with paths going through it.  Going up there always brings out the kid in my sister and myself!

Now, we're home and I have to start packing.  Leaving for NYC tomorrow!!

06 January 2012

awkward and awesome friday!

Inspired by one of my favorite blogs, The Daybook, here is a weekly post called Awkward and Awesome!

Awkward
  • Realizing midway through peeing that your friend's cat is in the bathroom with you, only to have it stare at you then rub itself against your legs.
  • Kind of wanting a pair of cute maternity jeans (even though I'm definitely not prego) just because they look soooo comfy.
  • Eating a banana in a public place and a nearby group of teenagers sniggering about it.  Grow up, people!
  • Taking too big a bite of said banana.
  • Wondering why the DVD player won't work, only to realize about two minutes later that nothing is turned on.
  • Middle-aged man at the self-checkout line staring at you as you approach, not realizing there are two open registers, and continuing to stare as you go about your checkout business.  I'm pretty sure he followed me out too, so that's more than awkward. It's creepy.
  • A random drop of water suddenly appearing on your skin in a completely dry environment.  Literally feeling the plop of that drop on your skin, but having no idea where it could have come from.  Seriously?
  • Realizing your fly is unzipped.  I know, it's not very original, but that doesn't make it any less awkward.
  • Being completely unable to put on lipstick inside your lip line while the lady at the MAC counter watches you.  I really can do it, I swear!

Awesome
  • I'm leaving for New York City on Sunday night with one of my best friends!  It'll be the first time I've ever been, and I can't wait to be in a city with such fabulous culture, fashion, and theatre!
  • Hearing the absolutely pouring rain on the roof.  I missed that about Seattle.
  • Hair appointment scheduled for tomorrow!  My bangs need trimming and shaping sooo badly, they're hardly even bangs anymore.
  • Seeing one of my best friends this week who I haven't seen since before I left for Boston this summer.  We tried to get together during thanksgiving break, and earlier this holiday break, but apparently the universe hates us.
  • Burping.  Okay... I know this is probably better suited for awkward for most people, but you have to understand that I never burp!  Whether I want to or not, I just can't do it, and it's the best thing ever when it just randomly happens.  I literally have so much respect for people who can burg on command.
  • Visiting my grandparents' house in Bellingham, WA - it's one of the nicest and coziest homes I've seen, and I love coming here!  Post on this to come this weekend.

the big nineteen

Today was younger sister's 19th birthday!  She's legal in Canada, people!

The whole fambam went out to dinner to celebrate...

... then proceeded to come home and open presents.

Of course, no birthday would be complete without our family dog.

What a cuddlebug!

The evening continued with watching Friday Night Lights on DVD {one of sister's gifts, and a new show for all of us}.  Popcorn and hot chocolate contributed to the evening, too, of course!  Happy birthday, sis!

I had originally planned on a new weekly {hopefully} post to begin today, and occur every Thursday, but decided to start tomorrow as the birthday took precedence.  So keep your eyes peeled and on the lookout for a slightly awkward and mostly awesome post tomorrow!  More on that then...
